Concert Review/Setlist: The Black Keys and Cage The Elephant at the Wells Fargo Center 9/20/14

The Black Keys and Cage the Elephant concert on Saturday 9/20 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia was nothing short of sublime. If not a full house, it was close. My best description of the audience reaction to both bands was a full throttle ovation!

Cage the Elephant was not just a warm up act, but the 1st course of a fine musical meal. The power and energy exploded from their performance. Matthew Shultz, lead singer, exhibited his gymnastic and vocal skill in tandem. He jumped, strutted, twirled and went airborne while belting out an impressive 11 song set. "Take It Or Leave It" and "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked" got folks up, singing and dancing. Even though most folks came to see The Back Keys, no one was in a hurry for these guys to leave.

The Black Keys came on stage with little fanfare. The audience exploded into a roar, got to their feet and stayed hyped and vertical for the entire concert. Dan Auerbach's guitar was incendiary and his voice searing. Patrick Carney's drums are more prominent musically and physically than most bands. They are the engine of the dual force of this high-powered band. Richard Swift on bass and John Clement Wood on keys round out a band that puts out wall of sound. The light and video show were different with distortion, vivid colors and close-ups used to keep your attention and at the same time keep you off-balance. This is pure retro throwback blues driven rock!

This night the set was 21 songs in length with a 18 song run and a 3 song encore. “Dead And Gone” from El Camino was the appetizer. The response was immediate and thunderous with the repose coming from the crowd. The tension built the entire night. “ Gotta Get Away” and the Edwin Collins cover “A Girl Like You” were my favorites. The guitar and vocals riveting in their strength and complexity.

The return for the encore took a bit of time. The chorus from the crowd built until the band returned with “Weight Of Love” a 7 minute slow burner off of True Blue and ended with the hands down crowd favorite “Little Black Submarines.” Both bands gave us all they had and it was very good!
