1970---Just a short few months before her death (Oct. 4, 1970) Janis Joplin buys a head stone for the grave of her musical idol, Bessie Smith(1894-1937). Bessie was buried after a lavish funeral in the Mont Lawn Cemetery in Philly without a grave marker. John Gee, her husband, collected her royalties and held events to raise money for the head stone, yet never bought the stone.
