On Saturday, May 17th The Vault at Vinyl Revival hosted a night of Neo-Psychedelia and Paisley Underground mixed with a little Dream Magic Psych. Additionally we had two guest DJ’s, Eric Slick from Dr. Dog and Dominic Angelella form DRGN KING. They played LP's and 45's in between sets and I had the opportunity to speak with Eric about Dr. Dog and the music business. He is the band's drummer and arranged the horns on the new album, B-Room. The album is a group project and the group is the driving force in the wide range of musical styles on this fine album. It is disappointing to hear that sales are light, even though, by many standards it is a very good effort. “Folks take our music†we make our living touring. Intellectually, I know this, but folks would not steal tips, a painting, or money, yet feel comfortable taking an artist's work. Eric and Dominic, thanks for coming and adding a little more color to a very musically colorful night.
Weekender came out first and set the mood with their dreamy Paisley Underground cuts from their album, Spanish Peaks. Nick and Eric Sheehan write the music and play drums and guitar. Tom Anthony and Emily Cahiel added depth with vocals and guitars. Emily's harmony gave the vocals that far off Blue Oyster Cult feel. I heard a lot of my favorites in their music, The Moody Blues, The Strawbs, Jefferson Airplane, and Blue Oyster Cult. This was most evident in the first song “LSD and the Age of Interest†and the last song “Spanish Peaks†which is also the title of their album. I enjoyed the performance and thought back to putting the earphones on, turning the volume way up and listening to “White Rabbit.â€
Laser Background is a unique and different act combining traditional instruments, synthesizer and sampling to produce a one off sound. Laser Background is Andy Molholt and Mark Schaffer with Andy being the writer and producer of the music. His music is about his life, his childhood and the people who influenced him. Laser Background is named after the backdrop you could order for class pictures, you paid extra and it was cool thing especially for young guys. All of the cuts are from the upcoming album, Correct. The combination of the instruments, synthesizer, sampling and his falsetto voice on songs like “Jawbreaker†and “White Courtesy Telephone†felt sort of eerie yet in a alluring way. All the songs speak to vulnerability, how malleable you are when you're young, how exciting it all is in retrospect. Bandcamp and Facebook are easy ways to track this group and buy their music.
Last but not least was Pine Barons, a mix of Americana and Neo-Psychedelia cooked into a nice tasting stew. Keith Abrams voice has many textures from Johnny Cash to Jackson Brown. Collin Smith hit the drums, Shane Hower strummed the bass and Brad Pulley picked on guitar to complete the band. Many of their songs had unusual intros and endings with distortion and reverb used as it was in the heyday of psychedelic music and at times mixed with Americana to produce a juxtaposition. I also listened to their self-titled album Pine Barons, interesting music and cover art. They played 4 off the album, “Carnival,†“Black Matter†â€Chamber Choir†and “Don't Believe What They Told You.†Maybe it is because a gave the CD a couple of plays, but I like these songs the best. All the songs have catchy, emotional yet deep lyrics that explore love, religion/god, and our slippery hold on time and space.
This is the next to the last concert before a break for the summer. I though is was a wonderful first year for The Vault. A mixture of music and movies from classic rock to punk. Vinyl Revival has a large catalog of Albums for purchase both on-line and in person. You can actually play the record before you make a buy, unusual but very cool!!! The store is located right next the The Lansdowne Theater in downtown Lansdowne...
