In the dawning age of electronic music fore-fronting the popular charts of perception we tend to lose what was so great about recorded songs in the first place. This is why when listening to The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger, or The GOASTT for short, we are greeted not only with a sense of fantastic melodic revival but also an entirely new world reserve of genuine composition. With The GOASTT's new album Midnight Sun, released on Chimera Music, the listener is given a one-way ticket to the deep depths of soothing synthetic sounds, absolutely in for a brave and delightful journey.
Definitely remarkable just how real this album is, despite the entire mystical presence characteristic of Midnight Sun. The GOASTT's Sean Lennon recorded most of the instruments on the tracks himself, an incredibly impressive achievement as we hear and feel musical prowess with a sense of precision radiating superiority. Vocals by Charlotte Kemp Muhl are stunning, we hear a personality pleasing to entertain and an absolutely delightful presence. An honest and utmost serious display of brilliance is performed with The GOASTT, welcome to the urgent and necessary introduction.
Midnight Sun is heavy in harmony, each song has a tasteful view and direction of pleasing vocal accord. The record starts off with Lennon on the drums laying down a groovy beat in "Too Deep", the album's opening track. With piercing organs, meditative guitars and soothing vocals the listeners easily enter a new realm of sonic landscape. There is also a very ancient feel with Midnight Sun, as though we have discovered a capsule delivered from the distant future (or past). Second song, "Xanadu" is playful and displays Lennon's powerful ability to write a verse with melodic determination, with great keyboard organs singing along. Backward guitars and wobbly effects echoing the outer reaches of space, the listener is given a glimpse of a unique world occupied by sound.
This leads to the magnum opus, "Animals" as the third track on Midnight Sun. Popular culture and listeners worldwide have not heard a song this strong in ages. Absolutely refreshing to the mind, body and soul to hear a chorus as brilliantly written heard here. With themes of mind control, aliens, distant stars and the instinct animal in us all the song is an anthem for the 21st century in harboring importance. Powerful guitars, ingenious harmony and visual transcendental existence, "Animals" encapsulates an intrinsic manifestation of exactly the music we especially need. Catch the music video for the song below. "Animals" leads into very sensual track, "Johannesburg" a great spotlight highlighting Charlotte Kemp Muhl's great natural talent to carry a melody with fantastic rhythm.
The fifth song on the album is the title track, "Midnight Sun", a groovy song with guitars, washing organs, and very surrealistic lyrics and an infectious chorus. Lennon displays his beautiful use of a vast array of instruments here, one can only imagine his knowledge of the electronic sounds of the Moog synthesizer. Next song is the epic, "Last Call" with Wizard Of Oz themes as the song breaks into an all-out swaying guitar and keyboard driven dance. Track seven called, "Devil You Know" starts with a chorus laden vocal and melodic guitar. Muhl's vocal delivery is lovely and makes a cheerful companion with Sean's great presence. Eighth song on Midnight Sun is "Golden Earring", a classy and ballroom dance characteristic song with charm.
Ninth song, "Great Expectations" is an absolute perfect example of a well demonstrated chorus with powerful verses. Lennon's display of song-writing genius is shining and quick as a comet here, the song is ever pleasing to the ear. Just incredibly reinforcing and puts faith back into this artificial ecosystem of plastic constructed songs. Tenth track, "Poor Paul Getty" tells a great story of a young star, with a furiously catchy chorus, "He was only seventeen and everyone knew his name." A very playful song in great narrative fashion. Next song, "Don't Look Back Orpheus" tells the Greek mythology story of Orpheus, with tambourine, acoustic guitar, ultimate harmony and flute. Midnight Sun ends with the perplexing "Moth To A Flame" leading fairies and "creatures of the night" down and out to start their new journeys.
Entirely constructed of melodic constellations, The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger's Midnight Sun is sure to induce honest infatuation and discovery. One can fathom the amount of records Sean Lennon has listened to by this point, and one notion is for certain he is highly capable of producing a thoroughly developed product. What we see here, listeners, is the future of music as we know and with the help of The GOASTT we are able to grow. Midnight Sun holds a certain magic not yet witnessed in the synapses of our brains since the British Invasion, although this may hold more of an invisible territory breach. The GOASTT were on tour with Tame Impala and The Flaming Lips this past year, as well as playing South By Southwest. Starting the first week of May, you can catch The GOASTT on tour, playing Philadelphia at Johnny Brenda's on Friday, June 6th. Midnight Sun is released on Tuesday, April 29th via Chimera Music.
