| Concert Review by a Fan: 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony |

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Barclay Center on Thursday April 10th was a night to remember. I know there are critics and even fans who feel the celebration is overly commercial and even a sham, well I and all the 18,000 plus folks there that night disagree. The selection process and voting is not perfect, but what is? It was a fabulous night of the best in live music delivered by legends and by some legends to be.
The only real issue was the Kiss mess. A mess it was and I and many fans are disappointed that the members of Kiss and the Hall of Fame could not work it out. As Stevie Nicks said, “You only get inducted once.“ A chance to bury the hatchet and thrill the fans, lost forever.
Peter Gabriel launched the night with “Digging in the Dirt†and launched it was. Like a rocket the concert started and Peter was the first on stage. He was joined on his second song by Chris Martin of Coldplay fame, a great duet of shifting voices and styles. “Washing the Water†is not one of my favorites, but it rocked. His last song was “In Your Eyes," a wonderful multilayered classic that received vocal support form a full Choir. The Choir added an almost heavenly sound, a fancy bow on the present that was this song.
WOW!!! what a response Cat Stevens received when he walked on stage. A long heart-felt standing ovation set up by Art Garfunkel's induction speech and Cat's acceptance, both full of gratitude, surprise and wonderment. After “Father and Son†ended, Cat was very misty and emotional. His voice was perfect, his delivery spot on and his stage presence magnificent. We all got into “Wild World†with Cat, I think he was surprised by the fact we all stood, sang and swayed. The icing on his and our cake was “Peace Train.†The Choir made another appearance and the roof came off the Barclay. Powerful is an understatement, rousing and inspirational come to mind and we could no get enough. He left saying “peace, peace, peace, fitting!
The tribute for the induction of Linda Ronstadt was delivered by Glen Frey saying how grateful he was to Linda for helping him start his career and how inspired he was by her staunch defense of her music, of musicians and art. A fitting start to, I believe, the highlight of the night. Five women and Glen Frey put on a tour de force of country rock music. Carrie Underwood stole the show with her rendition of “Different Drum.†Her voice and heart soared and we heard and felt it. Covering Roy Orbisonâ€s “Blue Bayou†was easy for Linda and Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt and Carrie Underwood were spot on with their soaring harmonies. Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow and Glen Frey joined the group for “It's So Easy.†We received a lesson on six part harmony by some of the finest voices in music. Finishing with “When Will I Be Loved†was a fitting finale to a performance you can only describe as perfect!
Bruce Springsteen inducted the E Street Band. He was honest about the up and downs, growing pains, and how collective success replaced ego as the controlling interest. They all talked about missing the Big Man. They went on a bit too long but redeemed themselves with what fans have come to expect from Bruce and the band, a kick ass, in your face over the top show. We all wanted “Born To Run†and “Spirit In The Nightâ€, we did not get them, but did get a thunderous performance of “E-Street Shuffle,†The River†and “Kitty's Back.†Can't go wrong with Bruce and the E-Street Band, we didn't. I've heard them more than a few times over the years and many believe they have gotten better and I agree. Hard to improve at that level, but they have.
I'm a Philly boy to the bone, so Hall and Oates have my heart. Their acceptance speech was short and not about them, it was why weren't Todd Rundgren, Chubby Checker, the Delfonics, The Styistics etc not in the Hall. “She's Gone†was the appetizer for a four course meal of blue-eyed soul. If anything Daryl has gotten more soulful over the years. “I Can't Go For That(No Can Do)†was the fuse that lit the audience's explosive retort “(No Can Do).†Even the VIP section was up dancing, crowding the stage, getting into this catchy piece of Philadelphia fare.
Nirvana had Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, St. Vincent, and Lorde take the lead for the deceased Kurt Cobain. In each case they filled his shoes with originality. Joan Jett rocked “Smells Like Team Spirit.†Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth gave “Aneurysm†a potent twist with both her voice and stage calisthenics.
Annie Clark(St. Vincent) gave “Lithium†her own unique style, a softer yet pointed approach. Lorde was given “All Apologies†a tough cover for anyone, she did a fine job, just enough edge.
The concert started around 7:15 ended around 12:30 about 5 plus hours of mostly great music. From this fan's perspective worth every dime of the money and time spent. Truly a night to remember and talk about with other rock fanatics, I mean fans... |
