Day 1 Dave Matthews Band Caravan Fly Rainbows and Money Balloons

The first day of the 3 day Caravan festival has completed down in Atlantic City. Everyone here was very fortunate that none of the scattered strong thunderstorms in the rest area came through and hit Bader Field, we were all left dry, albeit very dirty and dusty. The forecast for the rest of the weekend looks clear and slightly cooler as well, which will be perfect.

The crowds were light early on, probably being a Friday (weekday) but filled in as the day progressed. This weekend should see more concertgoers with single day passes. Overall the crowd is not enormous or overwhelming compared to other festivals, ranging around 30,000 not say 80,000. Spread around 3 stages for most of the day, getting a good yet comfortable view was not a problem.

Now to some music. David Ryan Harris performed an excellent set early on in the day. Combination of his guitar and smooth voice took a few by surprise who hadn't heard him before. The

Carolina Chocolate Drops equally won over the crowd on the main stage early in the day. Their rousing traditional folk set had the crowd chanting for one for song which the stage manager granted.

G.Love loves being back home, the Jersey shore is an adopted home for Philly and gave a great show with his band.

Ray Lamontagne was on point. He stuck to a lot of new material from his latest release playing songs like "Repo Man and "For the Summer".

I ventured over the Atlantic stage because I didn't want to miss the Flaming Lips, and I'm glad I didn't. I was hoping to hear them play their own songs, but instead they performed their 'Dark Side of the Rainbow' set. That consists of songs from Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' (Money, Us and Them, Time, Great Gig in the Sky, etc. ) interspersed with song from 'Wizard of Oz' (Over the Rainbow, Off to See the Wizard, etc.) This all happens with the pageantry that is the Flaming Lips, ie. tripping video wall, confetti cannons, smoke, giant audience balloons, 15 sexy Dorothy's dancing, a few Scarecrows, Tin Men, and Lions, plus an inflatable fish guy and one inflatable guy I'm at fault to describe.

Of course, Dave Matthews Band. Good set, they seemed loose, having a good time. Played a couple rare songs. 'Captain' hasn't been played since 7/24/04, and first time for 'Buena' by Morphine. Great cover from the 90's alt rock band. I think I was the only person in front of the VIP section who knew the song, oh well, I enjoyed it. Great sax line for Jeff Coffin. They ended early but played a nice four song encore.

There are two more day packed full of bands. I;m not sure whose on your list but I'd check out: Vusi Mahlasela, Thievery Corporation, Bobby Long, Guster, Damien Marley, Warren Haynes, Alberta Cross, Dawes, Amos Lee, Dr. Dog, Grace Potter, and Michael Franti.

See you on Bader Field.
