2nd Annual "Make Music Philly" on Sat., June 21 Will Celebrate Music All Day, All Over Philly

For the second consecutive year, Philadelphia will join more than 500 cities worldwide that celebrate music on Saturday, June 21st, the first day of summer and the longest day of the year. On that day, Make Music Philly will feature free music performances taking place across the city from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

"The inaugural Make Music Philly day launched a new and wonderful tradition last year - adding a new element to our city's rich musical legacy," said Mayor Michael A. Nutter. "On June 21, 2014, Make Music Philly will bring together even more resident artists, businesses and community organizations in a celebration of musical diversity, ingenuity and Philly pride."

Make Music Philly features many sizes and kinds of organized concerts and informal performances, and showcases performers of all ages, music genres, and talent levels. Events can take place at almost any kind of indoor or outdoor venue or space, from the conventional to the offbeat. The only requirements are that all Make Music Philly events must be located within the city limits, take place between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, and be free, open and accessible to the public.

The inaugural Make Music Philly on June 21, 2013 featured approximately 150 free music events. The goal for this year is to present 300 or more events. After seeing other U.S. cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Denver (among others) present free music celebrations on June 21 as part of National Music Day, Philadelphia public radio station WXPNâ€™s General Manager Roger LaMay wanted Philadelphia to also participate, and contacted the cityâ€™s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy. WXPN helps the Office to organize and present Make Music Philly.

Last year, iradiophilly participated on Make Music Philly day make by with a live broadcast from the Piazza at Schmidts with performances by Tophboogie, Vikesh Kapoor, Def Banannas, Liz de Lise, James Hearne, Vice Royal, and Levee Drivers. (see photos)

This year, Make Music Philly will culminate in a concert at Pennâ€™s Landing to close the event (artists to be announced).

Make Music Philly is a true â€œdo it yourself,â€ user-created event. Interested musicians, volunteers, and venues can register now at www.MakeMusicPhilly.org to perform, organize, and host music performances. Special software within the site can be used to match artists who wish to perform with nearby and available performance spaces, and performers whoâ€™ve arranged an event with a venue can be listed. Venues, promoters, community and arts organizations, businesses and anyone who loves music and wants to see and hear it flourish in Philadelphia are encouraged to register at the website now, to ensure a full day of fun, free music events across the city.

The Make Music Philly website is also the source for all information about Make Music Philly, and as of May 15, it will contain the continually-updated schedule of all Make Music Philly events. A Make Music Philly Twitter chat will take place on March 18 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Participants can ask questions and learn more about the event by using the hashtag #MakeMusicPhilly. Starting on April 4, social media sharing via the website will be enabled, using the same hashtag.

Sponsorship is needed to support Make Music Philly, and to help engage as many Philadelphia neighborhoods as possible. For sponsorship information, emails may be sent to sponsorship@makemusicphilly.org. Support can also be provided via the Make Music Philly Kickstarter campaign to raise $20,000 (MMP Kickstarter) for the websiteâ€™s searchable listings, maps, and matchmaking software; outreach materials and advertising; t-shirts for attendees, volunteers, and donors; and more.
