| Concert Review: A Great Big World w/ Secret Someones - World Cafe Philadelphia 1/29 |

A Great Big World made its second appearance at the World Cafe Philly on 1/29/14. They have had quite a run since they were here last year. A record contract with Epic, a recording of "Say Something" with Christine Aguilera, an appearance on the American Music Awards and Victoria Secret Fashion Show are among the exciting things. A Great Big World experienced this past year. Additionally, they have appeared on the Tonight Show and Live with Kelly & Michael. They just released their first album, Is There Anybody Out There. The album is rated number 5 locally and 4 nationally while debuting on the Billboard Top 10.
The warm up act was Secret Someones. It is hard to describe their style except to say they were very good. Being inspired by Tom Petty, Weezer and Talking Heads tells the story. They played country rock, pop, psychedelic, and a little metal. This band has four members with three women and one guy on drums. They all took turns singing lead and being the front person. They all did quite well with strong voices, great three and four-part harmony coupled with a real stage presence.
Leila Broussard played bass while Bess Rogers played the electric guitar. Zack Jones was on drums and Hannah Winkler played acoustic guitar and synthesizer. Though all sang lead, Hannah was at the lead for most of the songs. They performed about 10 songs ranging from "I Won't Follow" which had a Hiam type sound to "Let Me Go" which had a Doug Sahm, Sir Douglas Quintet spin to it. The audience was very appreciative and got into their music. They finished with a song that had some bite to it titled "Quit Putting Me Down." Mostly, Secret Someones spoke about relationships from a women's point of view, about love found and lost and relationships good, bad and indifferent.
The main difference between this A Great Big World concert and the one in June 2013 was the size of the crowd and the intensity of the reaction to their songs. This was one of the most enthusiastic audiences I've seen, a sell out, packed from wall to wall. The interaction Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino had with the audience was personal and touching, at times joyous and at times sentimental. They expressed gratitude and awe concerning their recent success. Their dream over the last 5 or so years was to be able to perform at the World Cafe Philly downstairs and here they were.
The performance was basically the album. Thunderous applause started when they came on stage and continued the entire night. They write and perform a very inspiring and uplifting brand of power pop music. The audience swayed, sang, danced, laughed and smiled their way through one of the most entertaining concerts I've attended. If you came in blue you left smiling and feeling good. Ian doesn't just play the keyboard he envelops it, he pounds on it, he makes it sing. The performance of the entire band borders on frantic, on hyper intensity, it really rocks.
“Rockstar,†as with most of their lyrics, questions where are we and where are we going. A lovely tune that is the epitome of an ear worm , 'ah ha ha I just wanna be a rock star.' Both Ian and Chad did a solo with Chad doing “I Don't Wanna Love Someone Else†and Ian doing “Say Something.†“Say Something†is one touching, simple yet gripping tale of love slipping away. “Say Something†gave the audience the chance to be a chorus, we sang 'say something, I'm giving up on you' with emotion and gusto. On the uptempo side of the ledger were “Land of Opportunity†and â€Cheer Up!.†both fast paced and full of promise.
The encore and a cut from the album is “Got To Get You Into My Life.†Earth Wind & Fire, Blood Sweat & Tears and Ella Fitzgerald are just a few of the greats who have covered this legendary song. A Great Big World more than did the song and themselves justice. Chad played a mean horn to add gravitas to the effort. I'm not surprised by their success. I really have enjoyed them for a couple of years. Give the album a listen, see them if you can, follow them on Facebook and you'll feel that positive vibe.
