Concert Review: Benjamin Poole / Runaway Youth, Friday 1/3/14 at Vinyl Revival

I had an extreme case of cabin fever on Friday Jan. 3rd when I decided to venture out into the weather to see and hear some live music. I took a drive to one of my favorite places, Vinyl Revival, to catch a concert by Benjamin Poole and Runaway Youth. The atmosphere inside was in total contrast to the weather. The concert was a sell out which surprised me, given the weather. The authentic and warm nature of the performance was reinforced by the appreciation of the audience.

Benjamin Poole opened with a whimsical yet serious and at the same times funny performance. He writes his own music and I'd say it describes the painful and obvious with probing lyrics and catchy tunes. He uses his guitar as his partner not just as an instrument. He performed 5 or so songs off his album Sing Yourself Better. The title deftly describes his music as art and therapy. Broken and mended relationships dominate the album and dominated his performance. His 5 songs were well done with special mention for “Anniversary,” a story of a point in time in a souring relationship, and “Snowstorm Song,” about deceit. “Snowstorm Song” has a very unusual cadence and the reprise is 'I listen to your bullxxxx and you listen to my bullxxxx.' It sounds weird but it just works. A notable performance by an artist who emotes his feelings and misgivings.

The features act was Runaway Youth, a group of 5 college students who started the band as a senior project and picked their name by using free word association, so goes Runaway Youth. Kyle Henson is on lead guitar and lead vocals; Chris Paterno is on drums, guitar and vocals; Alan Bungmayer is on guitar, sax and cello; Alex Parkinson is on bass and vocals; and Bruce Leto plays keyboards. They play an uptempo mixture of indie rock, blues, and strong country. They all listen to John Mayer and Third Eye Blind and are influenced by Dan Wilson, Noah and the Whale and John Legend.

Runaway Youth started with “Calm at the Surface” and followed with “This War.” Both songs are uptempo indie rock tracks that are deep dives into relationships. The use of the sax and cello add soul and texture to the fine vocals. The most audience response was received by the song “Boston Bound.” A curious tale of a not so fondly anticipated trip to Bean Town. The song I was most impressed by was, I believe, “Morning Light.” The 3 part harmony was splendid, tight and strong. They closed with Steve Miller's “The Joker.” A song that elicits audience participation on its' own, and it did. A soulful and skillful rendition to top off a really fine performance by a young and up and coming band.
