Kanye West sued for unauthorized sample in "Bound 2"

Kanye West has used his share of samples over the years and is probably well acquainted with the process of obtaining mechanical licenses through the The Harry Fox Agency. That being said, it seems unusual that he did not get permission or pay for the hook he sample from a 1971 song "Bound" for his #1 hit "Bound 2".

56-year-old Ricky Spicer of the Ohio soul group The Ponderosa Twins Plus One is bringing the lawsuit against West. Spicer is the 'Plus One" of the group that also included two sets of identical twins (Alfred and Alvin Pelham, Keith and Kirk Gardner). Spicer was twelve -years-old when he wrote and recorded the song. He was shocked when he heard himself on the radio singing backups to Kanye West. The sample was lifted and used exactly as recorded in 1971. The sample is used multiple times throughout the song.

Spicer is asking to be compensated or to cease and desist. In additional West, Spicer named his records labels Roc-A-Fella Records, Island Def-Jam Music, Rhino Entertainment and Universal Music Group as defendants.
