| Concert Review: Vulcans and Black Horse Motel at the World Cafe Phila. |

The concert by the Vulcans and the Black Horse Motel was a real nice night of music, food, setting and company. I had previously seen the Vulcans as part of Philadelphia Songwriters Project winners. I had not heard or seen the Black Horse Motels until about a week before the concert. I gave them a look on YouTube and enjoyed their sound and performance.
It was a full house at the World Cafe upstairs on Saturday night the 8th of September, a full house of friends, family and fans of the two groups. The crowd was excited to see and hear the performance of what felt like a launch for both groups. I was with a couple of friends who are ,like myself. big live music buffs.
I'm always interested how groups get their names so I asked both. The Vulcans, as you can imagine, adopted and chose the name by way of Star Trek. They recently dropped the The to avoid conflict with an 80â€s group of the same name. Being a local, I was interested in how the Black Horse Motel arrived at their name. As it so happens they choose the name from the now defunct and burned down Black Horse Motel.
The Black Horse Motel opened performing most of the cuts from their album 'Red Summer Spirit.'
They have five members playing their own spirited version of Americana. David Richardson plays banjo, mandolin, keys, guitar and vocals; John Cardic plays guitar and vocals; Megan Manning plays drums, percussion, melodica and vocals; Dersiree Haney plays cello, keys, melodica, bells and vocals and Johnell Lawrence plays viola and violin. Since the concert Josh Cradic has moved on and is being replaced by Galin Fitz.
I really enjoyed the enthusiasm, pace, power and quality of their performance. The audience clapped, tapped and joined in on many songs. The vast majority of folks at the concert were friends, family and fans. I do not think many were walk-ins. I did not get a set list nor did I keep track of every song played. I think that “The Apology,†“Renaissance,†and “Red Summer Spirit†are my favorites off their album and the songs I enjoyed the most live. I was impressed with how all of the members moved from instrument to instrument with ease and skill. I talked with a few of the band members and felt their zeal for the music and enthusiasm for performing. The Black Horse Motel did a fine job of getting the audience warmed up for the Vulcans. You can purchase their album 'Red Summer Spirit' via Amazon or iTunes and see them live at Penn State University, Milk Boy and at Melodie's in Admore.
I had the pleasure of seeing the Vulcans as part of the Philadelphia Songwriters Project about two months ago. When I became aware they were going to perform at the World Cafe I asked a few friends to come and see these fine young singers, musicians and songwriters. After the concert, we all agreed we were impressed with the quality of the songs and performance. The Vulcans are Nick Lindsay, Aaron Spangler and John Thomas. I am a major fan of the folk rock groups of the 70's and in some ways the Vulcans are throw backs. Throw backs in the best sense of pristine three part harmony, superb picking and a fine harmonica. I did not get their set list and did not note every song, however, I think I remembered most of songs from their album 'Shadows' and cuts form Kettle Pot Tracks recording session.

If you like folk rock music, you ought to go to see the Vulcans. They are appearing at Dewey Beach, Godfrey Daniels, Tellus 360 and Lancaster Dispensing Company.
Black Horse Motel and Vulcans did a combined group encore of Woody Guthrie's treasure “This Land Is Your Land.†The World Cafe is just a prefect place to see and hear music, have a good meal, meet the performers and soak up the best of Philly.
