Bernard Hopkins Now the Oldest Boxing Champion Ever

Philadelphia boxing great, forty six year old Bernard Hopkins has become the oldest fighter to win a major world championship. On Saturday night in Montreal, Hopkins won the WBC light-heavyweight title from Jean Pascal. Hopkins, now (52-5-2) is the oldest fighter to take a major world belt since George Foreman won the heavyweight title with a victory over Michael Moorer in 1994.

"I won't retire until I'm 50," Hopkins said.

Hopkins won the WBC, IBO, and The Ring magazine titles by defeating the 28-year-old Pascal (26-2-1). Pascal, a Montreal fighter, was making his fifth defense in front of 17,560 at the Bell Centre.

Hopkins and Pascal fought to a draw on December 18 and in the rematch Hopkins made certain there would be no doubt who would end with their arm raised.

"He's a great champion. He has great defense and a lot of tricks. I was a young champion," Pascal said of Hopkins after the fight. "These two fights will help take me to the next level. I learned a lot from Bernard and his style."

Hopkins showed off his youthful fitness throughout the fight, taunting Pascal by doing push-ups as he waited for him to start the seventh round.

Hopkins landed more punches and was able to slip many of Pascal's power shots, answering with clever jabs and scoring with righthand leads.
