South African Star Simphiwe Dana impresses in US tour, graces cover of Rolling Stone

In a soulful performance at World Cafe Live on July 10th, South African sensation Simphiwe Dana made the second of her US performances to kick off her US tour. The jazz vocalist who was recently featured on the Cover of South Africa's edition of Rolling Stone magazine put on an impressive show full of soulful, emotional melodies, showcasing her incredible talent to US audiences who are just now hearing about her.

Accompanied by a smooth bass, drums, and a sax (as well as the occasional xylophone), Dana sang strong, powerful songs dredged up from the soul, moving the audience with the power of her voice.

There was power in the words she spoke as well. Dana’s songs included not just the cheery and soothing vibes of love songs, but harsh, sobering tales of her country’s past. One song told of the pains of the apartheid era, and the feeling of not knowing whether one’s family members would be safe when they came home that night.

I got a chance to speak to Dana after the show, and she emphasized how exciting it was to finally perform in America, an audience her music is only beginning to reach.

"With the help of my country, I’ve come to present myself to the United States, and show the best side that I can."

She could not have shown more humility and appreciation for the success she has had, saying that throughout all the “amazing developments” in her career, she is trying to "find my space in the world."

2. Ndimi Nawe
3. Music in the Air
4. Mayine
