| Philadelphia Songwriters Project at the Granite Run Mall |

On Friday July 12th the Philadelphia Songwriters Project brought their talented performers to the Granite Run Mall for a free concert. The project is a decade old and provides local songwriters a platform to perform their creations.
I must say all of the performers were friendly and engaging. The audience was small but enthusiastic. It was nice to see how the performers supported and cheered for their fellow contest winners. A nice touch was that all of the artists had their CD's available for either free or a donation. I made a donation and took one of each. I've listened to all of them a couple of times and find that I keep putting them back into my player in my car over and over! The performances were top notch and the recordings intriguing, well done and fresh.
The concert started with the Reverend TJ McGlinchey who is real hard to classify. He is a little Dr. John, a little of Jerry Garcia and a lot of himself. He performed; “Too Much,†I Wanna Know,†“Hey Baby,†“Don't be Afraid,†and “If You See Her.†He does a little of everything from folk to blues to a taste of New Orleans. He does it all exceedingly well. By the way, he is an ordained minister, so goes the name. His CD is Tell Me to Stay.
The second performer was Angela Sheik who is a looper. Looping has been around for a long time with artists like The Beatles being early adopters. However, modern looping as performed by Angela is very different. She is the band , the back up singers, the producer and lead singer all wrapped up in one talented package. She was the winner of the 2100 USA Boss National Looping Contest. It takes a real sense of rhythm, harmony, tempo and a sense of how to bring it all together to do it well. She performed; “Feathers, “Red Dress,†“Run for Cover,†and “ When Will I See You Again.†She has a strong voice and meanders through many styles with ease. Her 2 CD's are Songs From the Red Box and One By One.
The third act was Amanda Duncan who is a little bit county and a nice dose of the blues. She was accompanied by a fellow playing percussion on a box and doing some harmony. She sang a number of songs including; “The Love I Have For You,†“Want You in My World,†“Ferris Wheel†and she had us all singing along on “Baby Baby†and “Don't Feel Like Dancing.†She is a very personable performer who has fun with her audience and keeps it light by fooling around. Her CD's that I received were Love I Have for You and Holiday Classics.
The final performance was The Vulcans who for legal reasons are now just Vulcans. This trio consists of Nick Lindsay, Aaron Sprangler and John Thomas. They were the winners of the Philadelphia Songwriters Project. One of the band was stranded in South America so on this night the Vulcans were Aaron and John. I'm sure they lost something, however, I did not feel it impacted their performance. I spoke with John and Arron before the show and discussed the influence of Mumford and Sons and The Avette Brothers on their music. I personally hear a lot of early AMERICA, Poco and Pure Prairie League in the harmony and song structure. The performance started with “Auburn Girl†a song that is a fine sample of their picking and harmony. They followed with “Risk in the Flesh,†“Lessons Learned†and “Tomorrow Just Today.†“Tomorrow Just Today†is sort of their signature song. The audience broke into clapping and tapping along. It is a catchy and very upbeat song, my favorite. They finished with a soulful rendition of Bob Dylan's “I Shall be Released.†Their CD is titled Shadows.
I came with a friend and we both thoroughly enjoyed all the performances. We talked with many of the other folks and we all felt we were treated to a fine slice of the best new artists from our area.
