AMERICA at the Rams Head Inn 4/20/13

The AMERICA concert on Saturday April 20th at the Rams Head Inn was very special. The venue is small with just over 300 seats. The club is set up with tables and chairs. I was one table from the stage to the left. The sound was perfect, not overpowering as it can be in a small venue. The band was full of energy, their trade mark harmonies very tight. Being that close, watching them play their guitars was something to be seen, true mastery. The crowd was very knowledgeable, not the greatest hits type of crowd. AMERICA played a few cuts from their more recent albums. From 2007 Here and Now they played “Chasing the Rainbow” and “Ride On”. From their 2011 cover album Back Pages they played “Woodstock”and” Till I Hear It From You” a Gin Blossoms hit written by Marshall Crenshaw.

I have attended more than 20 AMERICA concerts over the last 40 years and this was one of the best. At the end of the show my wife handed an album up to Dewey Brunnel to sign, he signed it and went over to the far edge of the stage and got Gerry Beckley to sign it, a real treat. As we left the Inn, we asked the young women in the ticket booth for the concert poster. Much to our surprise, she went outside, opened the marquee and gave the poster to us. That was icing on the cake of a fun night of great live music performed by artists who enjoy their craft and an audience who appreciated it all.
The play list was as follows:
“Miniature”
“Tin Man”
“Don't Cross the River”
“Daisy Jane”
“Riverside”
“I Need You”
“Here”
“Ventura Highway”
“Chasing the Rainbow”
“Woodstock”
“Cornwall Blank”
“Hollywood”
“Ride On”
“Till I Hear It From You”
“The Border”
“Women Tonight”
“Only In Your Heart”
“California Dreaming”
“Lonely People”
“Sandman”
“Sister Golden Hair”
“Horse With No Name”

Not their usual set list, however, one that represents 40 plus years of making very pleasing , heart felt and memorable music. I give America a five star rating on singing in the shower.” Ventura Highway”, “Daisy Jane”. “I Need You” and “Tin Man” are my favorites to sing with the top down in my car. In fact in Japan, “I Need You” is one of the top songs couples use as a wedding song. As far as my air guitar rating, I give AMERICA 4 stars. The early stuff has a lot of great acoustic work and the later stuff produced by George Martin has a lot of real nice layered guitar and banjo work. I must admit I am a bit bias, I am a long time fan!
