Apple introduces 7.9 inch iPad mini

Two years ago Steve Jobs decried the market of small screened (7 inch or so) tablet computers, basically saying that the screen size could not be utilized effectively for making great tablet applications. He cited Apple's own testing that showed how larger 10 inch screen give more space so that our chubby fingers have room to touch things properly on the screen. His other reasons why the 7 inch market would fail had more to do with the specifics of the time and how Android was releasing product updates.

Steve might have been throwing a curve ball back in Oct. 2010 with his statements regarding tweeners. Well, Jobs didn't always stick to his do's and don't list and I wouldn't doubt he'd love this new iPad mini. It was probably in the product pipeline before he passed last year anyway. Besides, if our fingers can properly operate an iPhone, we can handle a midsize tablet.

This afternoon in a theatre in San Jose, Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage to introduce a variety of new Apple product updates and go over numbers. The iPhone 5 sold 5 million units in the first weekend. They introduce a new Macbook Pro 13" with Retina display. Also, they pulled out a new generation of iMac, which is so thin it doesn't even look like it's there from the side, the computer almost disappears. Much different from the gaudy colorful iMac of the 90's. iPad has been upgraded too. It includes the A6 chip and 4G LTE that iPhone 5 has now.

The big finish was left for the new kid in town. iPad mini is the official name of the smaller tablet. It's all aluminum, white or black. It has a 7.9 inch screen and comes in the same resolution as the full size version at 1024x768. That part's important because it will run all of the 275,000 native iPad apps normally, with no changes from developers and no stretching. Some other specs: Dual Core A5 chip, HD Face Time camera, 5MP iSight camera, comes in wifi or wifi+LTE, Lighting connector, .68lbs

Starts at $329 16GB wifi.
