MTV VMA Video Music Awards 2012; No Crazy Surprises, Rihanna and One Direction win big

The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards tonight were moved back an hour so that everyone could switch over and watch President Obama's Democratic National Convention speech. I wonder how many people actually made the switch, or just stayed on to watch the immediate replay of the awards. It's been years since MTV actually participated deeply in political coverage and voter activism on air. Harken back to the 1992 election and the 'Choose or Lose' program, especially the landmark question and answer session with then Gov. Clinton (remember 'boxers or briefs'?) MTV News supplied in-depth coverage of the races from beginning to end with their constant updates from Tabitha Soren and Kurt Loder. 'Rock the Vote' came later and encouraged young voter participation. However, just as “reality” programming has proven lucrative, some actual reality programming has gone away. Not to say they don't do some, just it doesn't feel the same. Just like tonight's award show, which is giving out awards for videos the channel doesn't play. Vevo and Youtube is where the music video finds life now.

Anyway, this night was very tame for a VMA show. There was no Fartman, or Kanye stage rush, or Rage member climbing the staging, or Pop star makeout session, although Rihanna and Katy Perry did sit pretty close together. The performances were all ok, nothing groundbreaking, but here are a few of the highlights.

One Direction took home the most 'Moonmen' of the night with three, including Best Pop Video and Best New Artist. The singular uniform angle of their haircuts is certainly befitting their name. They have catchy pop songs and British accents. They also performed their hit “One Thing” to the screams of the fans.

Rihanna opened the night with an energy filled performance of the sexy “Cockiness (Love It)” and club anthem “We Found Love”. Rihanna won Video of the Year for “We Found Love”.

Frank Ocean performed a powerful rendition of “Thinkin' Bout You” on an interesting stage set. He was sitting on an ice boulder next to a roaring campfire. The stage was adorned with long grass and low hanging fog. The background screens were projecting night scenes of stars, the moon, distant mountains, and the northern lights.

Some other performances to note: Green Day played a new song "Let Yourself Go,” and lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong looked pretty good despite being hospitalized in Italy just a few days ago because of the flu. Alicia Keys also debuted a new song, “Girl on Fire.” The song sounds like it will be pretty good, but something sounded off during her performance, like she was off key or the keyboard wasn't tuned. It was odd and I don't think I'm the only person to have noticed that there wasn't something quite right. Pink played her single,”Blow Me (One Last Kiss),” accompanied with her usual high flying act.

The gang from the Twilight movies got up to thank everyone for watching their movies and as they've been doing at the VMAs lately they rolled the exclusive clip for the last one, “Breaking Dawn Part 2”. You have to forgive me, but it looks like they just played a Volvo commercial.

The end of the show was handed to Taylor Swift. She performed her latest release “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” which is quickly becoming a Pop and Country chart hit. Swift writes a lot of songs about herself or those in her life, so a song like this that seems to tell a story about two people at the end of relationship has caused a lot of rumors. People love to speculate whether or not it is about Swift and a real life celebrity ex. If it is or not and they were in the audience or not, she performed with a lot of grace and attitude.
