Sigur Ros Soars at the Skyline Stage at the Mann 7/29/12

On July 29,2012, Sigur Ros broke their 4 year hiatus with a debut performance at the new Skyline Stage at the Mann Center. They began their tour in Philadelphia with back to back sold out shows before heading around the US, Canada, and on to Europe. Their long awaited tour could not have begun more successfully. The all new Skyline Stage was the perfect venue for them as the airy hilltop lifted the otherworldly music and helped it surround the entire venue. There was not an area of the venue that the music did not carry. The musicality seemed to be matched perfectly with the newly designed stage and multicolored lights, giving the area a feeling of warmth. Comradery can always be found at concerts seeing that everyone comes together for a shared love, but in this case the feelings were none I had felt before. I saw everyone talking and laughing with others, acting as old friends would. I believe this could have been because the venue was smaller and more relaxed and Sigur Ros is not as well known as Top Chart artists. Audience members were able to stand at the stage, lounge on the grass, or roam around. Overall, I feel that the venue created an atmosphere that made the show more enjoyable, not to mention the skyline view that cannot be found anywhere besides Fairmount Park.

Perfume Geniuses, a single man band from Seattle, opened the show and complimented Sigur Ros as any opening band should . Mike Hadreas shared the same flowing sounds while keeping the audience intrigued with his heartbreakingly beautiful lyrics. He played piano with an accompanist and really poured his heart into his music. It was clear how much time he spent writing each song. The only complaint I would have about his music is that it seemed that his songs ended too abruptly.

Just as the sky was turning to dusk and the pink clouds were fading. The trees light up with purples and greens and Sigur Ros took the stage. The audience erupted with cheers as they began their first live performance since 2008. They started the show with the tremendous build up of Ekki MÃºkk, a song off their new Valtari album. From there, they launched into a 2-hour show of the musical genius that is Sigur Ros. Their compositions ranged from slower songs to more upbeat songs that electrified the air with energy. As beautiful strange as the songs were, Sigur Ros were just as intriguing to watch, from Jonsi strumming his guitar with a bow to the horn/string trio. Although Jonsi only spoke a few words of English to say they were all having so much fun, it was clear how much they had missed performing. It was an experience like no other concert I have gone to and I feel honored that I was able to see their first performance of the tour. I could not have expected a more wonderful debut. From here, Sigur Ros goes on to play around the world until November 25th, when they perform their last show in Malaysia.
