It's hard to admit when you start to get older, you may still feel the same as you did when you were in high school or college and keep up with current trends, but when you look around and you have a job, mortgage, spouse, and kids, things have definitely changed. That doesn't mean you still don't want to get out see a great rock concert when you can.
The 90's as a decade aren't in the distant past but they aren't the most recent one on the books either. In some ways parts of the 90's never left, a lot of music still sounds the same, a lot of fashion is the same, and we still use a lot of the same slang. However, something that can be distinctly attributed to those years is the advent and explosion of alternative rock. The first half produced and highlighted the grunge subgenre most associated with rock in the 90's (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam). Later on though, alternative rock had a chance to break out in different directions. Some of the biggest selling and widest reaching acts would just be lumped into something called Modern Rock. I'm thinking Goo Goo Dolls, Third Eye Blind, Matchbox Twenty, you get the idea.
So, you want to see your favorite late 90's modern rock bands play their hits for you like when Rendell was mayor? ok, well you are in luck. Turns out they all want to play for you too, and are going to make it easy. Art Alexakis from Everclear called up Mark McGrath from Sugar Ray and said something to the effect of "Hey, I know we have lives, and kids, and things, but how about a 90's tour with all the bands that had hits when we did?" McGrath thought it sounded great.
The tour is going to be called Summerland Tour 2012 featuring Everclear, Sugar Ray, Lit, Gin Blossoms, and Marcy Playground. Between the 5 bands, they have sold 10s of millions of records and had chart topping singles that still dominate radio airwaves. Tickets are on sale now. Unfortunately they aren't playing Philly. but they are coming close by twice. The tour is stopping by the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ on 7/21 (up the NJ Parkway from I-175) and at the Sands Bethlehem Events Center in Bethlehem, PA on 7/24.
Tickets can be bought at http://www.summerlandtour.net/ Maybe you could pop in an America Online CD and plug in your modem to buy them, or find a Ticketmaster outlet and stand in line.
