Manayunk Bike Weekend PG rated, Law Protects Athletes From Cardiac Arrest, Philly #1 Sports Crazed

The Philadelphia International Cycling Championship will once again come to the city this weekend, and residents of Manayunk are excited but at the same time dreadful of the spectacle that usually surrounds the events. Like last year, city officials plan to enforce a zero-tolerance for rowdy and unruly behavior on race day. They want to promote a family friendly atmosphere. Bottles and cans are not permitted along the race course, and fans are reminded to drink responsibly. A special Bike Court will also be setup starting Friday to handle any arrests.

Gov. Corbett signed a law today designed to protect student-athletes with undetected heart conditions from sudden death while playing. The law requires a coach, game officials, or school-certified athletic trainer or doctor to look for signs of cardiac arrest, including fainting, difficulty breathing, chest pain, dizziness and a racing heart rate. If an athlete is showing those signs they must be pulled from the game or practice immediately. In order return to the court or playing field, the athletes must have a written note from a doctor, registered nurse, nurse practitioner, or cardiologist. The law also requires coaches of sports and cheerleading to undergo annual training in the warning signs for cardiac arrest.

Travel + Leisure Magazine has a full assessment of America's favorite cities. Philadelphia faired pretty well when it came to most categories, especially in the eyes of tourists. Visitors ranked Philly much higher (22 Top 10s) than we ranked ourself (12 Bottom 10s). We came out #1 for Sports Crazed City and Historical Sites, and did well in Culture and Food Categories. We failed miserably though in cleanliness, safety, attractiveness, heath, and friendliness (though mostly due to our own self ranking).

Tonight will be clearly out and cooling off with temperatures in the 70s this evening in Philadelphia.
