Pilot Dies in Doylestown Plane Crash; Fuel Spill Closes Delco Elementary; DE Emergency Ends 7/13

The pilot of a small prop plane was killed after it crashed into a wooded area in a residential neighborhood in Doylestown on Tuesday morning, 6/15. It happened around 10:30 a.m. on the 3800 block of Country Club Drive in Buckingham Township a short distance from the Doylestown airport. 79-year-old Martin Sailer Jr. of Upper Black Eddy was the only person aboard the single-engine Vans RV-6A when it went down. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials say that Sailer contact the tower to say the aircraft had caught fire and he was coming in for a landing. The FAA and NTSB will be investigating the cause of the crash.

An elementary school in Delaware County will have to remain closed for the last week of school and graduation will be moved following the fuel spill over the weekend at a nearby gas station. Coebourn Elementary in Brookhaven, PA, will go virtual for the final days of the year this week after over 4,000 gallons of gasoline spilled into a nearby retention pond and surrounding environment over the weekend. Fumes from the spill will keep children out of the building. Kindergarten graduation ceremonies on Wednesday morning will be moved to a municipal building across the street. Officials believe the spill started Friday night, 6/11, when the Gas N Go received a shipment of fuel from Lee Transport Systems. A criminal investigation is underway to determine who is responsible.

Delaware Governor John Carney announced on Tuesday, 6/15, that he will lift the coronavirus COVID-19 related state of emergency next month. It will expire on July 13. The state of emergency was first signed on March 12, 2020. As of Monday, 6/14, 68% of adults in Delaware have received at least one dose of the vaccine. "We now have the tools to prevent COVID-19 infection, serious illness and hospitalization," said Carney. "Get vaccinated. Ask your friends and family if they've received their shot. These vaccines are extremely safe and effective. Even if you're young, healthy and not worried about the effects of COVID-19, consider doing your part. Getting vaccinated will prevent new infections among our immunocompromised neighbors, and help us keep moving past this pandemic." Carney also signed a modification to the existing order that says teacher and staff in schools and child care do not have to wear masks when children are not present. Students and staff do not have to wear masks outdoors.
