Philly School Board Approves All-Digital Plan; Massive Fire in Chester County; New Wawa Drive-Thru

The Philadelphia School Board voted on Thursday, 7/30, to approve the School District's revised reopening plan 7-1. Superintendent William Hite introduced a new plan this week that will start the school year off all-digital after receiving push back from parents, teachers, and staff on the original hybrid plan during last Thursday's 8-hour meeting. Virtual learning will be in place through at least the first marking period which ends November 17. The district will reevaluate whether to begin some form of in-person instruction then and only if safety and health conditions allow at the time. The school year will begin on September 2. The school district is working on making sure that every student has the technology needed to participate in the all-digital learning. That includes not only having a Chromebook or other device, but having appropriate Internet access. "We remain in constant communication with local legislators and business leaders to see how we can make sure all of our families have access to reliable internet service," said Hite. The district is also working to ensure that students with special needs receive the services they need. Food pickup and distribution sites would continue.

Firefighters are battling a massive three-alarm fire in Chester County on Thursday night, 7/30. It started around 7:30 p.m. at the Ashwood Apartments on the 700 block of Worth Boulevard in North Coventry Township. Large flames and heavy smoke could be seen coming from the building. The entire roof has been destroyed and the fire consumed most of the building as the three stories collapsed in on themselves. Firefighters have had water issues and are using a nearby pond for water. Four injured people have been taken to the hospital. The building housed around 100 people in over 40 units. The Red Cross is on the scene to help those displaced.

Wawa in planning on building its first-ever drive-thru only store in Bucks County. It will be built at the intersection of West Trenton and Pine Grove Roads in Falls Township, PA. The 1,850 sq ft freestanding drive-thru will offer all of Wawa's favorites without having to leave your car. Construction is set to start in late August and the opening is targeted for late December 2020. The store will employee 25 people, including 4 full time positions. Wawa had announced earlier this month that it would open its first drive-thru window in a store being built at Rancocas Road and Highland Drive in Westampton, Burlington County, NJ. That will be a full store with gas.

"Wawa continues to test new store concepts with this latest drive thru format, providing an opportunity for our customers to still experience and enjoy their favorite Wawa products while remaining inside their vehicle," said Terri Micklin, Director of Construction, Wawa. "It is critical to provide new ways to access Wawa, increase convenience and provide new options for service."

"We are hoping to learn from the layout, workflow and traffic flow at this location, as we continue to explore alternatives for longer term application to our stores post-COVID-19," Micklin said. "We appreciate the opportunity to partner with Falls Township officials, who are providing us with the approvals and support of this newly designed store format that will be of benefit to the community."
