Phillie Phanatic Debuts New Look at Spring Training; New Sneakers, Slimmer Body, and Wings!

The Phillie Phanatic made his debut at Spring Training at Spectrum Field in Clearwater, FL, on Sunday afternoon, 2/23, with a few changes to his appearance. He is slightly slimmer than before, which may actually make it easier to navigate the stands. He also has a new pair of sneakers and socks. His feathery eyebrows and tail have also been spruced up. The biggest change comes in the form of gloved hands and 'wings' that replace his furry fingers. There are many foam Phanatic hands out there that are now anatomically incorrect. We'll see if it affects his ability to work his mojo on opposing pitchers. Despite being a bird, he still cannot fly.

Our green furry friend from the Galapagos has evolved over the years, but these new changes are reportedly in response to a rights lawsuit from the character's original creators, Bonnie Erickson and Wayde Harrison. The Phillies bought the rights in 1984, but the original rights holder claim they have the right to renegotiate the copyright after 35 years. No matter what the Phanatic looks like, he's still the #1 mascot in all of sports.
